Know What You're Buying 2.0

A few weeks ago we told you that 9 karat gold meant that there is only 37.5% pure gold in the metal... ummmm WHAT?

So, what is the other 62.5% made of?

Pure gold is made up of 24 out of 24 parts gold, aka 24Karat.

9K is made up of 37.5% pure gold and 62.5% of other metal alloys such as copper, silver, palladium, zinc and sometimes nickel.

14K is made up of 58.3% pure gold, meaning 41.7% of other metals.

18K is made up of 75% pure gold, meaning 25% of other metals.

Why do we do this?

Because pure gold is a very soft metal, hence other metals are added to create strength and durability.  Here at VOA we use 18K for our signature collections as we believe that our classic pieces are special and that luxury pieces should last a lifetime.

Does it matter whether you're buying 9K or 18K?

HELL YES!  Especially if you are about to invest in fine jewellery, you aren't really buying fine jewellery when you are buying a mix of metal that is not even half pure gold!  Make sure you look at the prices, if it doesn't seem worth paying $X amount for 9K jewellery, you're most likely right!

What is the point of making 9K when it's not gold?

It's cheaper to make and cuts costs where possible for the manufacturers!  Lot's of people buy 9K jewellery, although, do they actually know what it is, is the biggest question!

Now you know what 9K is,  would you still buy it?
